toki is a noun that means time. You can use it with a verb, adjective, or another noun to make a time adverbial phrase that means at the time when … It is often followed by the particle ni.
When using a verb before toki, the form of the verb must be correctly chosen: use the simple present tense form for referring to the time right before the action; use the progressive form for referring to the time in the middle of the action; use the simple past tense form for referring to the time right after the action. These apply regardless of the actual time of the actions. For example:
